Shops with cannabis-leaf signs usually sell CBD or hemp products. They're legal, but they aren't clubs.
Is weed legal in Barcelona in 2026?
Not in public. Adults using cannabis in private isn't a crime in Spain, and the clubs are built on that. Buying it on the street, carrying it in public or selling it is illegal.

Why the rules keep changing
Spain has no law that regulates cannabis clubs. They rely on the principle that adults sharing cannabis in private, among themselves, is not a crime.
In 2015 the Supreme Court ruled that a club supplying cannabis to a large, open membership can be treated as drug trafficking. In 2018 the Constitutional Court struck down Catalonia's 2017 law that tried to regulate clubs.
That leaves clubs in a grey area. Barcelona City Council decides where they can open through its planning rules, and the courts and police act against clubs that break them. That is why some clubs close, and why the rules can change from one year to the next.
Cannabis club scams in Barcelona and how to avoid them
If any of these happen, walk away.

Someone approaches you on the street. Promoters on La Rambla, Plaça Catalunya or the beach are not how real clubs recruit.

No name or address in writing. A real club or invitation service will give you both.

Money by bank transfer before any ID check. Membership fees are paid at the door.

No one checks your ID at the door. A club that skips it is breaking the rules that keep clubs open.

A price list before you've joined. Clubs don't advertise prices publicly.
If you've been scammed, report it to the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) and keep any messages and payment receipts as evidence.
Questions visitors ask
Do I need an invitation to join a cannabis club in Barcelona?
Usually, yes. Most clubs only accept new members vouched for by an existing member or by the club itself. You don't need to know anyone in the city: many clubs and invitation services arrange it online before your visit.
Can I join a cannabis club on the same day?
Sometimes, but don't count on it. Some clubs and invitation services can arrange an invitation within a few hours; others need a day or two. Request it the day before to be safe.
What ID do I need?
Your original passport. EU citizens can also use their national ID card. Photos, photocopies and driving licences are usually not accepted.
Do I need to live in Spain to join?
No. Visitors can join with an invitation and their ID. A few clubs only accept residents, so check before you go.
How old do you have to be?
18 is the legal minimum. Some clubs set their own minimum at 21, so check the club before you request an invitation.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes, but each person needs their own invitation and original ID, and signs up separately. You can't sign friends in on your membership.
Can I take cannabis out of the club?
No. Cannabis is for use inside the club. Carrying it in public can get you fined from €601, and passing it on to someone else is a criminal offence.
Can I smoke weed on the beach in Barcelona?
No. The beach is a public place. Using cannabis there can be fined from €601 to €30,000, and police patrol the beaches, especially in summer.
Are cannabis clubs in Barcelona closing?
Some have. The courts and the City Council act against clubs that break the rules, for example on where they are located or who they let in. Clubs that follow the rules keep operating. Check that a club is open before you go.
Can I pay by card?
Some clubs take cards, but many prefer cash. Bring enough cash to cover the membership fee.
Is it safe to visit a cannabis club in Barcelona?
Generally, yes, if you use a real club: invitation arranged in advance, ID checked at the door, no street promoters. Start with a small amount, ask staff for advice, and don't drive afterwards.
What's the difference between a cannabis club and a CBD shop?
A cannabis club is a private members’ association: you need an invitation and ID to join. A CBD shop is an ordinary, legal shop that sells CBD and hemp products, without the effects of THC. A shop with a cannabis-leaf sign is almost always a CBD shop.
